A TOS Review: Adaptive Placement Test and Individualized Lesson Plan (A+)

It’s common for homeschool parents to worry about gaps in their children’s education. Nobody wants Johnny to get to college and realize that mom didn’t cover that pesky little chapter on place value. After all, there were moments during my own educational experience when I asked myself, "When in the world did we cover this in school? Was this the day I fell asleep in class?" 

So maybe I’m being a little dramatic, but you know what I mean. A few years ago we got review A+ Interactive Math . When I heard that they had come up with the Adaptive Placement Test and Individualized Lesson Plan I knew that this was something Josiah needed to try. This particular program helps identify and close learning gaps in math. Yay! This was a much needed help for our house.

We received a three month online subscription (for up to 10 students) to Adaptive Placement Test and Individualized Lesson Plan . A+ Interactive Math focuses on interactive Math Curriculum. They provide multi-sensory resources available to the homeschool family for students Elementary to Algebra 1. 

 Our journey thus far has been easy peasy. We began with a simple login and I was ushered swiftly to the teacher dashboard and I set up an account for Josiah.

 Because Josiah is dyslexic and also struggles with Dyscalculia he really needs resources that are uncluttered and easy to use. Josiah began the process by completing the first adaptive placement test. The tests are broken down into Units. One test is taken at a time so that the student can concentrate on one unit. Which is big stuff when your student is distracted easily. Squirrel! 

I have moved on down the Placement Test list to show you how it works. Josiah has yet to take this test on money. 

The placement test is timed. You can see that there are two sets of boxes in the upper right hand corner.These are clocks. The top clock lets the student know how much time is passed. The bottom clock shows the student how much time is remaining to answer the question. The student also can skip the question or clear the answer. 

After the test, the student is given immediate results. There is also an option to retake the test.

What happens next is that an individualized lesson plan is developed.  I chose to let Josiah complete all of the lessons in the first unit before moving on to the next placement test. 

The individualized lesson plan has two areas: Multimedia Lesson with interactive Q & A and a Practice with Online Worksheets area. For this little demonstration I am using the Number Sense Unit. 

You can see that the lessons are arranged in concepts folders on the left hand side of the screen. Every day Josiah clicks a folder and works through that particular lesson. The lesson includes a short interactive lesson and an Interactive Q & A. Our lessons are with a nicely voiced woman. Josiah can replay the lesson as often as he needs it (or his momma tells him to).  

The Interactive Q & A is done well. I like that only one problem appears at a time. Also, Josiah can go back through the lesson if he, for example, clicks through the questions quickly and doesn't answer half of them. This has happened, my friends.  

After completing all the lessons in the Unit, Josiah can go back and retake his Placement Test. I have seen progress..which is exactly what it's all about.

Josiah does have a separate Log and dashboard. My dashboard allowed me to manage his account, review his progress, look at student lessons and worksheets and even change grade levels. I love that I'm in charge!

Remember, for this program you will need a computer with an online connection and speakers. We had a few computer hiccups during this review period. Mainly, I dropped mine and Josiah's just went black. Thankfully, he could still work on our desktop.
