I recently had an opportunity to review a new series from
Nichole Halbrooks Vaughn. The series is called Devotions From the Torah.
About the Author:
Author Nicole Vaughn
is the Children’s Ministry Director at Shiloh Baptist Church in Somerville, AL.
She is the co-administrator of CrossRoads Christian Academy. She is the founder
of Proven Path Ministries. She has also lead inductive Precept Upon Precept
studies, has served as an advocate for her local crisis pregnancy center and
has shared the testimony of Christ throughout her com-munity and abroad. Nicole
is a woman who is dedicated in her faith, devoted to her family, and driven to
share the truth of God with others. She and her husband, Patrick, currently
reside in Decatur, AL with their two youngest children.
If you like your devotions a little meatier (to chew on the
rest of the day) you will like these books. Nicole helps us relate to those
figures and heroes of the Bible in a more practical way. The series just doesn’t
deal with Biblical history. She brings those lessons down to where we live.
There are presently two books available in the series. Devotions
From Genesis and Devotions
From Exodus Part One are ready for study. Devotions from Exodus Part two is
in the works and there are 3 more books to follow.
I was able to enjoy both books, but I want to spend just a
bit of time discussing my thoughts about Devotions
from Exodus Part One. This book covers the first 20 chapters of the book of
Exodus. It begins with Moses Meets the I Am. The other main topics include, The
Plagues, Entering the Wilderness, and The Giving of the Law.
I was so blessed through this study. I have considered
myself to be in a bit of a wilderness experience as of late. I may think I have left certain thought
patterns, hostile situations and unhealthy mindsets behind, but I have not been
living in freedom. Those bondages (which have been so destructive in my life)
have kept a hold. Like the Israelites, I have been freed from bondage. I must
learn to live in that glorious freedom God has given me.
I want to share with you a passage from the book that really
struck home.
God has never once in his Word said
that following
him was easy. He tells us that his
yoke is easy and his
burden is light, but even in that, it
shows the existence
of the yoke and the burden. Oh
precious one, have you
heard it said that God does not call
the equipped, but
he equips the called? Know that this
is true.
I have a
few thoughts to share about this. I think in our modern Christian culture we
are being sold a bill of goods. Hear me out. We are told that if we suffer we
must be in sin. If we are not prosperous, God must not be pleased with us. If
this is your walk then walk it. However, in my humble experience this mindset
is harmful. It takes away from the truth
of the Cross. The sacrifice of the Cross. I have known pain. I have known
suffering. I have also known great Grace.
I also love the second part of this passage. I think another
fallacy we (especially as ministers of the gospel) are drawn into is that God
uses those with great gifts and abilities. This is simply not true. God calls those who
are willing. He provides us the tools to do the work.
Here is another beautiful quote from the book. Sigh. It
makes me feel very cherished.
I think this series of books will be a blessing to so many
of you. Both Devotions
From Genesis and Devotions
From Exodus Part One are available on Amazon either in Paperback or Kindle.
But here is my exciting news for you. I am able to give away
3 E-book sets of Devotions From the Torah. Which means 3 of you will receive
both Devotions From Genesis and Devotions From Exodus Part One.
Yay!
All I need for you to do is leave a comment in the comment
box. The giveaway will end on December 14.
If no one else claims them I would love to have a set and then pass them on to others if that would be ok
