I have to be honest with you. When the invitation came to be
part of the book launch team for Nancy Fileccia’s book, More Than a Memory, the Candace Kate Story I was hesitant.
Which is so unlike me. I am up to review anything. I would
probably review the phone book if anyone asked (is anyone using the phone book
anymore?). This is the thing. The main premise of the story made me
uncomfortable.
Family adopts a beautiful little girl. I can handle that
one. We have been through that beautiful journey ourselves (though ours was not
an international adoption). But then Family loses beautiful little girl to
Batten Disease. I wasn’t sure I wanted to hear the story. Thankfully, I made
the commitment and I am sooo, sooo glad I did.
Last year, I did a review for (TOS) A Journey Through
Learning. They make wonderful lapbooks (of which I am a big fan). When doing my research for my review I
discovered that the ladies who created the company (and lapbooks) did much of
their work while one of them was experiencing the heartbreaking journey of her
daughter’s terminal illness.
I didn’t even make the connection until I started to read
Nancy’s story. Her family was the one I had read about.
This story is really about Candace Kate. Nancy and her
husband, adopted Candace when she was 6-years-old from China. She was special
needs little girl and what unfolded was a journey that was more challenging than the family
could ever imagine.
Nancy persevered. She taught Candace braille. Encouraged
Candace to do everything and anything any child with sight would do.
When Candace was diagnosed with Batten Disease their world
was shaken. The last few pages of the
book are entries from Nancy’s journal as well as Candace’s obituary. I could
hardly breathe. I knew in advance what the end of the story was going to be,
but I had become so invested in this family. In this little girl.
I am so blessed to be part of the launch of this book. It is
absolutely beautiful. I was touched and challenged. I feel like Nancy poured
out everything that she was and is into this story. I feel like I know her and
I have never met her. The book began as journal entries written by Candace's bedside. She is using her experience to minister to other parents who have experienced loss.
I was challenged to live each day to its fullest. I was
encouraged that God truly has all of us in the palm of His mighty hand. I was
inspired to fill my son’s sweet cheeks with kisses (he’s 12 and was a bit
perplexed). If you are able, I encourage
all of you to read Candace Kate’s Story.
