A TOS Review: Self-Paced Bible (The Gospels)

One of favorite review products over the years was from Veritas Press. They simply provide a cool and fun way to learn. When I saw their name on the vendor list this time around, I may have thrown down a little happy dance. This time we had the privilege to review the New Testament 1: The Gospels using Self-Paced Bible from Veritas Press.

Veritas Press provides classical education materials to homeschool families. We know them best because of their fabulous online courses. In fact, they even offer an online Diploma Program for those who want to provide their students with an accredited classical education.

The Self-Paced Bible course is simply fantastic. And if I didn't need to tell you how it all works, I would just end the review right now and encourage you to go check it out.

But, first the details. There are a total of five Self-Paced Bible courses. The courses cover 32 biblical events and last for 128 class periods. These are completely interactive. There are no dry lectures. The student is introduced to a couple of fictional characters who take them through the lessons. For reinforcement, there are cool games and activities to help cement the information.

At the time of this review, only 3 of the Self-Paced Bible courses available. These include: Genesis to Joshua, Judges to Kings and The Gospels.

New Testament 1: The Gospels begins in Luke when the angel Gabriel came to Zacharias in the temple.

I want to show you a few screenshots from one Josiah's lessons a few weeks ago.

Each lesson begins with a review. I love this aspect of the program. I don't know about your kiddos, but mine continually needs the review. The material becomes more than just something to learn for a test.

Our hosts for the course are Benjamin and Jude. Benjamin is a carpenter and Jude his apprentice. More than simply telling the story, they provide a context for what is happening in the time, give further explanation when needed.

The material is presented in a variety of ways, For example, this is a screenshot of an animation telling the story of when Gabriel appeared to Mary.

I love that the student is given a context for where and how the story is taking place. The map below is interactive. The student simply clicks on the location to read its significance.

Several slides later the student is then given an opportunity to test their memory. He or she has to place each location on the map. There is plenty of room and time to get it right. The student doesn't have to worry about the clock.

Throughout the lesson there are fun and interesting activities for review or to inform.

At the end of the lesson the student is provided with a quiz. It is short and sweet.

And then the student is provided with an instant score, plus the opportunity to go back and review or see what question he or she missed (if any).

You can see that this is fun, fun fun fun. Most importantly Self-Paced Bible truly teaches the Bible. And not only the facts...they teach the heart of the message. Which I LOVE! More than anything I want Josiah to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. I want him to be rooted and grounded in a solid foundation. Scripture illuminates and exposes what needs to be exposed. This program not only teaches him those Biblical truths, but provides him with a better understanding of the history of the day and shows how God's plan has carefully and majestically woven itself throughout the ages.

I guarantee you will love Self-Paced Bible!
